“...the best teacher I ever had!!!”
Watercolor
Students learn to create strong compositions working from still life, en plein air, or their own photos. Color-mixing, paper-stretching, values, washes, wet-in-wet, and dry brush technique are taught and nurturing individual instruction addresses each student’s particular need. Demonstrations and critique further growth for both the advanced and beginning student. Gwendolyn has taught watercolor throughout the U.S. for 40 years, giving numerous workshops in various cities and venues, and her watercolors have garnered numerous awards in juried exhibitions. For years an active member of The Tennessee Watercolor Society, The St. Louis Artists’ Guild and the Memphis-Germantown Art League, Gwendolyn has studied with internationally known watercolorists Charles Reid, Tom Hill, Pat Deadman, Barbara Nechis and Claude Croney. With a B.A. degree from Principia College in Fine Arts where she studied watercolor under James Green, and a Master’s Degree with honors from Rhode Island School of Design, Gwendolyn brings a caring and authentic professionalism to her teaching that few offer. Students will be given a materials supply list at time of registration.
Drawing in Pencil and Soft Pastel
Solid drawing skill is foundational to all art making. With good instruction and practice, anyone can learn to draw or improve existing skill. Working in a variety of media—including charcoal, pencil, pen, and pastel—students will draw from observation, learning to create good composition, correct perspective, proportion, values, texture, and line through a variety of techniques. Materials will be supplied in class for the first session, but students will need to bring their own supplies after the first session. Materials will be discussed in the first class session.
Portraiture/Figure Course
Working from clothed live model and your photos you will learn to create correct anatomy as well as likeness in the human head and figure. We will work in pencil, charcoal, soft pastel, and watercolor. Students supply their own materials; materials list will be given at time of registration.
